Softball Notebook - Week 7

(WEEK 7) - Charlotte dipped below .500 at 18-19 overall and are 3-3 in the Conference after a 1-3 record in league play this week. The 49ers split a pair of games at Rhode Island on Mar. 29 and dropped a doubleheader at Massachusetts on Mar. 30. Freshman designated player Whitney Williams (Mocksville, N.C.) led the 49er offensive effort with three hits on the weekend ... Dayton moved to 15-14 on the season and 2-4 in league play. The Flyers topped last year's win total of 11 after a 4-4 week. Sophomore pitcher Eva Rappe (Little Rock, S.C.) picked up her seventh win of the season in a 7-0 complete game shutout win over Temple on Mar. 29. She has struck out 34 batters compared to last year's 21 mark and her 8-7 record is an improvement over a 2-7 ledger last season ... Fordham lifted its Conference record to 4-2 after a 2-0 week in league play and is 14-17 overall. Freshman Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, N.Y.) earned a share of her third Rookie of the Week award after she picked up three wins on the week with a 1.08 ERA in Cofnerence play. She allowed just one earned run and four hits in 8.1 innings of work and leads the team with six wins. Senior catcher Allison Storc (Byonton Beach, Fla.) earned Player of the Week honors after she posted 10 RBI in four games, including two home runs ... George Washington fell to 5-12 overall after dropping two one-run games to crosstown rival Georgetown on Mar. 26. The Colonials' A-10 doubleheader at St. Bonaventure on Mar. 29 was canceled due to inclement weather. Senior outfielder Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookville, Md.) went 4-for-4 at the plate, including a grand slam but the Colonials still fell 11-10 in the nightcap versus the Hoyas. Halkiotis became just the third Colonial to record four base hits in a single game ...La Salle fell to 9-15 overall and 3-5 in the league after a 1-3 week. The Explorers split a Conference series with Saint Louis with the win coming on Mar. 29 and dropped a doubleheader at Georgetown on Mar. 25. Sophomore third baseman Mary Pat Conville (Jamison, Pa.) had a hit in each game against SLU, including the game-winning two-RBI single in the seventh inning for a 3-2 win. She leads the Explorers in batting with a .366 average and has a team-leading 30 hits on the season ... Massachusetts is now 18-11 overall and 6-0 in the league. The Minutewomen extended their A-10 regular season Conference win streak to 24 games after sweeping Charlotte in a doubleheader on Mar. 30. Sophomore catcher Jessica Serio (Toms River, N.J.) batted .625 with a double and three RBI on the week. She was 2-for-4 in the A-10 series and extended her hit streak to eight straight games. Junior pitcher Brandice Balschmiter (Newark, N.J.) earned her fourth Pitcher of the Week honor after a 3-0 week in which she struck out 29 batters with a perfect 0.00 ERA in 19.2 innings .... Rhode Island went 1-3 on the week, including a split against Conference foe Charlotte on Mar. 29, to move to 8-19 overall and 2-4 in the league. The lone win was a 4-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against the 49ers on Mar. 29. Sophomore infielder Darci Borden (Elma, Wash.) belted a two-run home run in the fifth inning which proved to be the game-winning hit leading URI to the win. Senior pitcher Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts in seven innings of work ... St. Bonaventure was idle this week after a doubleheader versus George Washington on mar. 29 was canceled due to inlement weather. The Bonnies are 8-10 on the season and 3-1 in the league and will resume play on April 5 in a doubleheader at Charlotte ... Saint Joseph's moved to 2-2 in league play and 5-12 overall after splitting a doubleheader at Dayton on Mar. 30. In the Hawks' lone win, junior pitcher Dani Gonzales (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) struck out a season-high 11 batters in a complete-game 3-0 shutout. Gonzales allowed no walks, while striking out 11. Freshman shortstop Dana Bieniek (Lumberton, N.J.) delivered the game-winning hit, a double, in the seventh inning to put the Hawks on the board ... Saint Louis is now 12-18-1 overall and even at 3-3 in Conference play. The Billikens split a league series with La Salle and lost a doubleheader to Fordham on Mar. 30. Saint Louis' lone win on the week came in the series opener versus La Salle on Mar. 29 by a score of 5-4. Freshman outfielder Kristin Nicoletti (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore catcher Nikki Jost (St. Louis, Mo.) led SLU with two hits and two runs apiece. Nicoletti earned a share of the Rookie of the Week honor after batting .500 in four Conference games with a .667 slugging percentage and a .538 on-base percentage. She has posted a hit in five of the Bills' six A-10 games this season, including all four of SLU's games last weekend ... Temple went 3-1 on the week for an 8-9 record and 1-3 league mark. The Owls scored an impressive 37 runs in back-to-back shutouts in a doublheader versus Coppin State on Mar. 25 and then went on to split a doubleheader at Dayton on Mar. 29. Senior Teresa Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) hit .500 on the week, with five hits, including a team-high two triples and one home run. She added seven RBI in the wins over Coppin State.
