UM's Typadis Selected To Final Tryouts For U.S. Lacrosse Teams

Kathleen Typadis, UM

June 13, 2007

Baltimore - University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse rising senior Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) has been selected as one of 98 players from around the country to participate in the final tryouts for the United States Women's Lacrosse Developmental and Elite teams. Typadis is one of the top returning collegiate players in the nation and is a two-time IWLCA All-Region and Atlantic 10 All-Conference performer.

The U.S. Elite and Developmental teams represent the highest level of playing experience for women's lacrosse players and coaches in the United States.

This past spring, Typadis set a new single-season scoring record for the UMass women's lacrosse program with 52 goals. She carries a 41-game scoring streak into the 2008 season which currently ranks third nationally among active players. As a senior, her 131 career goals will be the third most in the NCAA among active players. Her 52 regular-season goals were the eighth most scored by a player in the country and she was one of just 15 players to break the 50-goal mark in the regular season.

Alongside Typadis, UMass assistant coach Sarah Albrecht (Braintree, Mass./Northwestern '06) has been selected to the final tryout list. In 2006 she became a member of the U.S. National Elite Team after leading her alma mater Northwestern to its second consecutive NCAA Championship title.

"This is a great honor for Kathleen to have made the first cut for the U.S. teams," said UMass head coach Alexis Venechanos. "These teams are made up of the best lacrosse players in the country and the world. This is a testament to her skill and desire as a player and will be a great experience for her as she prepares for her senior season. Sarah was on the team last season and I think her presence is a great benefit for Kathleen."

UMass has had three representatives on the U.S. National Team and three on either the U.S. Development or Elite squads. Marge Anderson '82 and Lisa Griswold-Lindley '87 both played on the National Team as did former UMass head coach Francesca Den Hartog McClellan.

The 98 players were selected from a pool of approximately 180 players that competed during the first round tryouts in the Stars and Stripes Division at the U.S. Lacrosse Women's Division National Tournament held at Lehigh University on May 26-27. The final tryouts for the 2007-08 U.S. Developmental and Elite team will be held from August 3-5, 2007 at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Tryouts for each team are held annually with the exception of the Elite team during a World Cup year. In that instance, players selected to the Elite team play for 23 months - from the October selection month through USA Team trials in August the calendar year following the World Cup.

Serving as the head coach for the 2007-08 U.S. Elite team is Sue Heether (Baltimore, MD). Her assistants are Ricky Fried (Washington. D.C.), Jennifer Ulehla (Pennington, NJ), and Mac Ford (Baltimore, MD). Elizabeth Kittleman (Philadelphia, PA) is the team's general manager. Michael Cantele (Gettysburg, Pa.) is the team's athletic trainer.

Serving as the head coach for the 2007-08 U.S. Developmental team is Amy Patton (Hanover, N.H.). Her assistants are Kerri Whitaker (Columbia University), Jen Larson (University Oregon), and Missy Foote (Middlebury, Vt.). Kimberly Simons (Baltimore, MD) is the team's general manager. Sandy Worth (Beltsville, Md.) is the team's athletic trainer.

Typadis and the Minutewomen posted an 8-9 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the Atlantic 10 this past season under first-year head coach Alexis Venechanos. The eight wins for UMass were the most since going 11-8 in 2003.
