George Washington, Xavier And Temple Join Field Of 64 In 2008 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship

Indianapolis, Ind. - Xavier, which captured its second straight A-10 Championship and fourth overall, and co-regular season champions George Washington and Temple were among 64 teams selected to the 2008 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, as announced Monday evening by the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee. This is the third time in four seasons that the Atlantic 10 Conference has had three teams qualify for the postseason Championship.

The Colonials (25-6) were awarded the No. 6 seed in the Greensboro Region and will face 11th-seeded Auburn (20-11) on Saturday, March 22, at 2 pm (ET) on ESPN2 in Stanford, Calif. GW will be making its 15th appearance in the Championship advancing to the NCAA tourney for the sixth straight year. Led by senior point guard Kimberly Beck, the 2008 A-10 Player of the Year, the Colonials earned one of 33 at-large bids into the Championship. Beck, a Lieberman Award finalist for the best point guard in the nation, was joined on the All-Conference first-team by junior forward Jessica Adair who led the Colonials in scoring with 15.3 points per game. The Colonials captured a 68-66 win over Auburn during a regular season match-up in Auburn on Jan. 3.

Xavier (24-8) earned the No. 9 seed in the Spokane Region and will square off against 8th-seeded Nebraska (20-11) on Sunday, March 23, at noon (ET) on ESPN2, in College Park, Md. Xavier earned the league's automatic bid after edging Temple, on March 10, 47-42, in the finals of the 2008 A-10 Women's Basketball Championship. The Musketeers will make their 7th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tourney and second straight after repeating as A-10 Champions. Xavier freshman Ta'Shia Phillips was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player and earned A-10 Rookie of the Year . She averages a double-double of 14.2 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.
 

 

The Owls (21-12) are seeded 11th in the Oklahoma City Region and will take on sixth-seeded Arizona State (21-10) in College Park, Md., at approximately 9:30 pm (ET) on Sunday, March 23, on ESPN2. Temple earned the league's second at-large bid and is making its fifth straight appearance in the Championship and seventh overall. Temple senior guard Ashley Morris, voted the Most Improved Player in the A-10 this season, leads the squad with 15.1 points per game and was a first-team All-Conference honoree.

Charlotte (18-13) will host VCU in a WNIT first round match-up on Saturday, Mar. 22 and Dayton will travel to Bowling Green for a first round WNIT contest on Thursday, Mar. 20. Charlotte was the automatic qualifier from the Atlantic 10 and is making its school-record sixth straight postseason tournament appearance while Dayton (25-8), which set a school record for wins in a season with 25, is making just its second-ever trip to the postseason after being awarded an at-large berth. Dayton's only other postseason appearance was a WNIT bid in 2000.
