La Salle Sweeps 2006 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships

PITTSBURGH, PA - The La Salle men's and women's cross country teams captured the 2006 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships, hosted by Duquesne University, today at Schenley Park.

The La Salle women won their third straight A-10 title paced by the Conference's first female three-time champion in senior Rachel Papin (Philadelphia, Pa.) with a time of 17:41.25 on the 5K course. Her first place finish earns the League's Most Outstanding Performer title and her time ranks fifth on the All-time Championship performance list. Junior Christa Plummer (Quakertown, Pa.) placed third followed by Carloyn Lipovsky (Ediston, N.J.) and senior Danielle Schopf (Glenolden, Pa.) at fifth and sixth respectively to lead the Explorers to the title with 26 points. Richmond placed second with a team score of 81 led by freshman Amy Van Alstine (Midland Park, N.J.) who captured Most Outstanding Rookie honors. Charlotte's senior Tsehaye Dagnachew (Jacksonville, N.C.) placed second overall to lead the 49ers to third place finish with 91 points. Xavier finished fourth (122) followed by Duquesne at fifth (155); Massachusetts (163), Saint Joseph's (167), Saint Louis (193), Dayton (214), George Washington (235), Rhode Island (281), Fordham (386), Temple (425) and Saint Bonaventure (449).

Top finisher for each school include Papin (La Salle), Van Alstine (Richmond), Dagnachew (Charlotte), sophomore Becky Clark (Xavier), sophomore Emily Beahan (Duquesne), junior Christina Derosa (Massachusetts), sophomore Andrea Florida (Saint Joseph's), sophomore Laura Coyer (Saint Louis), freshman Alex Miles (Dayton), sophomore Audrey Noonan (George Washington), senior Andrea Newton (Rhode Island), senior Danica Dupuy (Fordham), freshman Joanna Duffey (Temple) and freshman Sarah Popovics (St. Bonaventure).

La Salle's men took their fifth title over the past six Atlantic 10 Championships with a team score of 52 up-ending defending A-10 Champion Duquesne, which placed second overall. Senior Sean Quigley (Braintree, Mass.) captured Most Outstanding Performer laurels crossing first in the 8K event with a time of 24:39.9 en route to his second-straight A-10 individual championship title. Duquesne's junior Tom Slosky (Brackenridge, Pa.) finished second overall with a time of 25:02.2 leading the Dukes' to a team score of 83. Massachusetts finished third (99) led by a ninth-place finish from junior Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.) followed by Richmond in fourth (101) who's Andrew Benford (Ravenswood, W. Va.) earned the A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie honor being the first freshman to cross the finish line as he placed eighth overall with a time of 25:44.5. Charlotte took fifth (104) led by sophomore Adu Dentamo (Charlotte, N.C.) with a fourth place finish. Saint Joseph's finished sixth (120) followed by Fordham (166), Dayton (213), Xavier (235), George Washington (246), Rhode Island (326), Saint Louis (330), Temple (345) and St. Bonaventure (469).

Top individual placer for the men's teams include Quigley (La Salle), Slosky (Duquesne), Fischer (Massachusetts), Benford (Richmond), Dentamo (Charlotte), senior Mike Didio (Saint Joseph's), senior Frank Corrigan (Fordham), sophomore Mike Anderson (Dayton), sophomore Luke Beuerlein (Xavier), junior Joe Altenau (George Washington), junior Matthew Gallagher (Rhode Island), junior Steve Vargas (Saint Louis), sophomore Adin Mickle (Temple) and senior Andrew Shulha (St. Bonaventure).
