Day 1 Results

MONROEVILLE, PA - Sophomore Dina Senkina recorded an impressive straight-sets win over Val Chacon at No. 2 singles after teaming with freshman Radka Ferancova to win at the second doubles flight as top-seeded Temple downed No. 9 Rhode Island, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2007 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship on Friday at Club 4 Life.

Vying for their fourth title in program history and first since 2003, the Owls will face fourth-seeded Massachusetts on Saturday at 1:00pm in the semifinal round. Temple's Anastasia Rukavyshnkova and Felicia Frazier also emerged victorious in singles action at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively. URI edged eighth-seeded George Washington to begin the day, 4-3, as sophomore Grace Hedstrom's three-set victory at No. 4 singles proved to be the difference.

Sophomore Laura Murillo outlasted Xavier senior Alicia Papa in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) at the sixth singles flight to give UMass a hard-fought 4-3 win over the fifth-seeded Musketeers. Michele Spiess and Masha Pozar registered an 8-6 win at first doubles before earning straight-set victories at the first and second singles flights, respectively, as the Minutewomen moved one step closer to its first A-10 crown since 2001. Massachusetts opened Championship play with a 5-0 win over No. 13 Saint Joseph's.

Seeking its fourth consecutive A-10 title and fifth in the last six years, Richmond turned aside No. 7 Saint Louis, 4-0, on the strength of wins by Robin Carter, Beatrice Grasu and Ashlee Vosters in singles action. The Billikens opened the Championship with a 4-1 win over No. 10 Dayton as Ana Renda and Jo Becker were victorious at the second doubles flight and at Nos. 2 and 5 in singles, respectively. UR will square off against Charlotte in the semifinals at 1:00pm
 

 

The 49ers, who finished runner-up at the 2006 Championship, earned the critical doubles point as Koren Fleming and Michelle Alexander rallied to win the deciding match at second doubles as No. 3 Charlotte earned a 4-0 win over Duquesne. The 49ers downed La Salle earlier in the day, 4-0, while Duquesne rode the momentum of a closely-contested doubles point victory to defeat Fordham, 4-0.

Play commences at 8am on Saturday as No. 11 Fordham takes on No. 14 La Salle and No. 12 St. Bonaventure meets No. 13 Saint Joseph's.
